Shiloh Park Ranger to Continue Programs at Tennessee River Museum Shiloh National Military Park and the Hardin County (Tennessee) Convention and Visitor’s Bureau have partnered together to bring ranger led programs, lectures, and demonstrations to the Tennessee River Museum in Savannah, Tennessee. The first presentation of the 3-part series took place on July 26. The next two programs will be held at the museum on August 2, and August 13, 2010. The second installment in the series, “Natural Foods of the Native Americans,” is to be presented on Monday, August 2, by Shiloh Battlefield’s Ranger Marcus Johnson. Eight hundred years ago, prehistoric Native American peoples lived together in Shiloh near the bluffs of the Tennessee River. This community occupied the area through two distinct time periods: The Woodland Period and the Mississippian Period. The Woodland Period was marked by a transition in which the community became less nomadic, staying in one location to hunt and gather food. During the Mississippian Period a more structured society emerged, as well as the construction of mounds for burial and ceremonial purposes. This program will focus on a discussion of the foods that the Native Americans of Shiloh commonly gathered and grew to maintain their new lifestyles.
